The Savior Womb: Fleeing My Husband's Twisted Love
After endless suffering and countless needles, I was finally pregnant.
Looking at the positive test, Ethan and I wept with joy. This baby was our miracle.
Until I overheard the nurses whispering outside my clinic room.
I didnt need IVF.
And the embryo currently growing inside me wasnt mine. It was the biological child of my husband and his deceased ex-wife.
Later, Ethan fell to his knees in front of me, sobbing hysterically. "Clara, you can't be this heartless! This baby is Leos only hope!"
Leo was his son from his first marriage. He was dying of leukemia.
At that exact moment, I finally realized the truth. All my years of devotion, all my love for this family, was nothing but a sick joke. I wasnt a wife to them. I was just a carefully selected incubator. A stolen womb.
I stared at the man standing in front of me, feeling absolutely nothing.
The sweet promises and eternal vows we once shared had turned to ash, serving as nothing but proof of my own stupidity.
"Ethan, how long were you planning on lying to me?" I stared into his eyes, forcing out each word. "Is the baby in my stomach really mine?"
A flash of panic and shock crossed his face.
He quickly looked away, unable to meet my gaze. "Why would you ask that, Clara? Of course... of course its our baby."
Ethan didn't know that every time he lied, he avoided my eyes. Back when we were madly in love, I thought this little quirk was endearing. Now, it made my blood run cold.
Seeing him stumble over his words, I already knew the answer.
"Ethan, Im asking you one last time. Whose child am I carrying?"
"Why did the nurse say they didn't use my eggs?"
"Tell me the truth, or the second this plane lands, Im going straight to an abortion clinic!"
Ethan completely panicked.
I could see his lips trembling.
"Clara... Clara, please. Don't get worked up. Just let me explain."
"Before Isla passed away, she froze her eggs and left them to me."
"Six months ago, Leos leukemia relapsed. The chemo is working for now, but he needs a bone marrow transplant to survive."
"I used her eggs to save Leo!"
"If we have this baby, the cord blood can save his life!"
*Slap!*
I slapped him across the face, hard.
The other passengers on the plane turned to stare. Ethan lowered his head, not saying a word.
"Ethan, you disgust me."
"Clara, stop screaming. It's not good for the baby." Ethan grabbed my shoulders, his grip so tight it bruised my skin.
I saw a flicker of madness in his eyes. But Ethan, what made you think I would actually carry this child to term?
The moment we got home, I called my OB-GYN.
"Hi, I need to schedule the earliest appointment for a surgical abortion."
"My name is..."
Before I could finish, Ethan snatched the phone from my hand and threw it across the room.
"Clara, I know you're mad at me."
"I shouldn't have lied. But... I had no choice!"
"You know I could never have a baby with another woman. You are my wife. Only you can be the mother of my children..."
Hearing him ramble made my stomach violently churn.
I rushed into the bathroom and threw up.
I didn't know if it was morning sickness or pure disgust toward Ethan.
Ten minutes later, I collapsed onto the cold bathroom floor, completely exhausted.
My stomach was empty, but the suffocating weight on my chest wouldn't go away.
I gasped for air, tears streaming down my face.
Ethan, did you have any idea how badly I wanted a baby of our own?
When we first got married, you said you were worried Leo would feel left out. You asked me to wait.
And I agreed.
I poured all my love into Leo, trying to satisfy my maternal instincts.
But every time I saw other mothers hugging their children, hearing them call out "Mommy," a deep wave of loneliness would wash over me.
I craved that biological connection.
The most common joy in the world was a luxury I wasnt allowed to have.
It was only when Leo got sick that you suddenly suggested having a baby.
You said you wanted to bring new life into the house to give your parents hope. You said a happy environment would help Leo heal.
I was overjoyed. I agreed instantly.
You said you were worried about your age affecting the babys health, so you suggested doing IVF at a private clinic. Again, I didn't hesitate.
I never imagined that my endless compromises would be met with such a sick betrayal.
At the clinic, I was so desperate to get pregnant that I signed every paper you and the doctor handed me. I didnt read them closely.
I had no idea that one of those documents authorized them to implant Islas embryo into my body.
Ethan, how could you ever expect me to forgive you?
* * *
Ethan realized I had been in the bathroom too long and pushed the door open.
Seeing me sitting miserably on the floor, he worried the cold tiles would harm the baby. He quickly pulled me up.
He gently patted my back and whispered in my ear:
"Clara, I know you feel wronged."
"Just have this baby. After that, we can do whatever you want. We can have another baby, a biological one..."
I pushed him away with all the strength I had left. "Cut the crap, Ethan."
"You knew how badly I wanted my own child. Yet you used me. You tricked me into being a surrogate for your dead wife!"
"Clara, stop being so childish! Isla is gone. You are the one carrying this baby. Why can't you just love it as your own?"
I let out a bitter, mocking laugh.
"Ethan, what am I to you?"
"Just a brainless womb?"
"Clara, whether you like it or not, you are keeping this baby." A dark, obsessive look filled his eyes. "Don't push me, Clara. You don't want to see what I'll do if you try to hurt this child..."
I didnt want to argue with him anymore. I packed a small bag and walked out.
I called my best friend and asked to crash at her place.
Ethan started calling me like a madman, so I switched my phone off.
The next morning, I stood in front of the clinic, ready to end the pregnancy.
Suddenly, my phone buzzed. It was Helen, Ethan's mother.
"Clara! You and Ethan need to get to the hospital right now! Somethings wrong with Leo!"
My heart dropped. Instantly, my instincts took over, and I rushed to the hospital.
When I arrived, Ethan and his parents were pacing outside the ER.
Forgetting our fight, I ran up to ask what happened.
Ethan told me Leo had collapsed this morning, and they couldn't stop his nosebleed.
A terrible dread filled my stomach.
Fortunately, the doctors managed to stabilize him.
"Who are the child's guardians?" the doctor asked, stepping out.
We rushed forward.
The doctors face was grim.
"The patient's leukemia has relapsed. We need to start chemotherapy immediately."
"But chemo is just a temporary fix."
"If we don't find a matching bone marrow donor soon, the cancer cells will become completely resistant after two or three rounds of chemo."
Hearing this, Helen and Arthur collapsed into tears.
My eyes welled up too.
Through the glass window, I saw Leo lying in the hospital bed. The hair he had just started growing back was gone again, leaving his pale scalp bare.
His tiny arm was bruised from the IV drips.
Seeing him like this broke my heart.
Even though I wasn't his biological mother, I had raised him as my own.
To avoid being the stereotypical "evil stepmother," I had gone above and beyond for Leo.
But only I knew how humiliating and exhausting that love had been.
I never neglected him.
I managed his meals, his clothes, and his schedule. No matter how busy I was, I woke up early to make him breakfast and drove him to school every day.
I turned down countless promotions at work just to have more time for him.
Once, he ran into the street without looking. A car was speeding toward him.
Without thinking, I threw myself forward and pushed him out of the way. I ended up with two broken ribs, a fractured arm, and a week-long hospital stay.
Even then, Ethan and his parents blamed me for letting him run off in the first place.
But when Leo sat by my hospital bed, looking guilty and calling me "Clara," I felt it was all worth it.
Now, seeing him fading away, my heart ached.
As I stood there lost in thought, Helen suddenly fell to her knees in front of me.
She grabbed the hem of my jeans, crying hysterically. "Clara, I know Ethan did a horrible thing to you. But Leo is innocent! Please, I beg you, save him..."
I looked down at my mother-in-law crying on the floor, and then at my father-in-law, who stood silently beside her.
In that second, I realized the truth.
They all knew. I was the only one kept in the dark.
Was it because of my unconditional love for Leo? Was it because of the heavy moral chains of this marriage? Did they plan this because they knew I would always compromise?
I wanted to scream. I wanted to ask them if they had a conscience. Why did they think they could walk all over me?
But no words came out.
On the drive home, I stared blankly out the window.
Ethan drove silently beside me.
Finally, he couldn't take the silence anymore. "Clara, you heard what the doctor said."
"If we don't find a donor soon, Leo is going to..."
I knew he wouldn't let this go.
But this wasn't just about saving Leo. It was about the sick morality of what they were doing.
"Ethan, even if you force me to have this baby, even if I somehow forgive your lies, have you thought about this child?"
"Is this babys only purpose in life to be a savior sibling? To be a medical spare part for his brother?"
"Because of your selfish plan, this child will grow up knowing she was born without a biological mother who wanted her."
Ethan cut me off.
"Isla is dead, Clara!"
"You will be the only mother this child ever knows. She will only love you."
I shook my head.
"But I will always know. I will always look at this child and know she only existed because you hijacked my body. She has no biological connection to me!"
"Ive walked on eggshells raising Leo for years."
"I did everything to respect Islas memory. But who respects me? Who cares about my feelings?"
"Enough!" Ethan slammed his hand on the steering wheel.
"At the end of the day, you're just mad that this baby isn't biologically yours! Did you not see how sick Leo is? Is your ego more important than Leos life?"
"Clara, you are incredibly selfish!"
How hilarious.
I was the one who was lied to, yet I was the one being called selfish.
I wished I were truly selfish.
If I were, I would have divorced him and taken half his assets before ever getting pregnant.
I wouldn't have let this family leach off me until I had nothing left.
"Fine. Let's say I'm selfish," I said, staring at him.
"Let me ask you one question, Ethan. If Leos condition deteriorates before my due date, would you force the doctors to perform an early C-section just to get the cord blood?"
Ethans hands began to tremble on the steering wheel.
"I... I..."
He glanced at me, then quickly looked back at the road.
He tried to reassure himself. "No, that won't happen. Leo will hang on until the baby is born!"
"Or... or maybe we'll find another donor before then!"
I let out a cold, hollow laugh.
"We can't predict the future, Ethan. If we deliver the baby too early, she could die."
"And even if she survives..."
"Stop it, Clara... please, stop."
"She will likely have severe health issues. We are playing God, Ethan. It's a sin."
The car abruptly screeched to a halt on the side of the road.
Ethan buried his face in the steering wheel, his chest heaving as he sobbed.
"I don't know, I don't know!"
"Clara, I don't know what to do."
After a few minutes, he got out of the car, walked over to the passenger side, and yanked my door open.
Then, he fell to his knees on the asphalt.
He wept.
"Clara, I know I'm a monster."
"But please..."
"Please, just have this baby. She is Leos only hope."
"Please, think about our family..."
"An unborn baby is just an embryo, but this family can't survive without Leo!"
"If Leo dies, my parents will die too!"
I looked at him and realized he was completely insane.
There was no reasoning with a madman.
Besides, if the whole family started harassing me, who would take care of Leo?
To avoid a bigger tragedy, I had to play along. I needed to get the abortion quietly, and then cut ties with him forever.
I couldn't trigger him now.
"Get up, Ethan. I'll think about it."
"Let's just go home."
